The Language of Hell

It is impossible for virtually anyone to come to the topics of Hell and the Afterlife without numerous preconceived assumptions. As noted in a number of articles on this website, the idea of an ever-burning Hell where human souls are tortured for all eternity--with Satan and demons overseeing this torture--has permeated both religious and secular thought, and even popular culture,  for almost 2000 years. This means in particular that words related to the topics have taken on meanings that may never have been intended in the original documents of the Bible.

The following collections of information on this website are provided to assist the reader in examining some of the linguistic issues of the Hebrew, Greek, and English words related to the topics of Hell and the Afterlife.

English Lexicon

A collection of simple definitions of English words in the King James Version of the Bible that are related to the topics of Hell and the Afterlife. Other translations may choose to translate the same Hebrew and Greek words differently. Some of these variations are discussed in the articles on this website, and clickable links at the end of some Lexicon entries may take the reader to such discussions.

Strong’s Concordance Lexicon: Hebrew and Greek

The Lexicon entries in this collection, exactly as they appear in the Strong's Lexicons, are for root words that are often cited in relation to the topics of death, Hell, and the afterlife. This includes words beyond just the words translated as Hell, including terms for such concepts as life, death, soul, spirit, and destruction. They are provided as a central reference source  to save the reader time, rather than having to look them up individually in a reference work such as Strong's. Brief sample Bible passages are given for each, to show some ways that they are used in the KJV.

Scripture Collection

A collection of all Old and New Testament passages in which Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, and Tartaroo appear in the original languages of the biblical documents. Each passage is quoted as it appears in both the KJV and the NIV translations.

Scripture listing

A simple listing of just the scripture citations, chapter and verse, for the passages that are quoted in full in the Scripture Collection linked above. These are divided into sections based on which Hebrew or Greek word appears in the verse, for quick reference by those who may be using the list for their own research into the topic of Hell.

This site contains a collection of articles, on the topic of Hell and the Afterlife, that may each be used independently for research purposes. But it also is designed as a systematic, sequential overview of the whole topic, which can be read like a book.

For those who would like to take advantage of this perspective of the content, the articles are arranged in the Reading Guide as they would appear as chapters in a book, along with a few reference chapters at the end such as would appear in a book Appendix.
